The Rio Americano High School Baseball playoff run has already turned into one of the most unforgettable stretches in California high school baseball history.
In the first round of the playoffs against Armijo High School, pitcher Pierce Tully threw a perfect game, retiring every batter he faced without allowing a single runner to reach base. Most teams would consider that a once in a generation moment.
But Rio wasn’t finished.
The very next game, in the second round against Patterson High School, Joey Dormann delivered another perfect game, giving Rio Americano two consecutive perfect games in the D3 playoffs.
Behind the plate for both historic performances was catcher Everett Filippo, whose game-calling, leadership, and defensive work helped guide both pitchers through two flawless outings.
No hits. No walks. No errors allowing runners. No one on base at all.
A perfect baseball game is considered one of the rarest accomplishments in sports. Everything has to go right for all seven innings: dominant pitching, flawless defense, and composure under pressure. One mistake can end the chance instantly. For a team’s record, having two perfect games back-to-back in the playoffs is almost unheard of.
The odds of throwing even one perfect game are incredibly small, 1 in 4 million. In professional baseball history, perfect games happen only a tiny fraction of a time, only 24 in MLB history, and the probability of the same team throwing two consecutive perfect games is astronomically low. For it to happen during the pressure of the postseason makes Rio Americano’s achievement even more unbelievable.
The performances became so extraordinary that the team even received a shoutout during a national MLB broadcast while the A’s were playing in Baltimore. What started as an incredible local story quickly gained attention far beyond Sacramento, with baseball fans recognizing just how rare the accomplishment truly was.
Pierce Tully reflected on the historic moment after his performance, saying, “This was by far one of the coolest experiences of my life being able to do such a thing in the playoffs with my team. What made it more special was seeing my teammate Joey Dormann follow it up the very next game with his own perfect game. Above all the reactions, the coolest thing was seeing how happy my dad was after.”
What makes the achievement even more impressive is that perfect games are never just about the pitcher: every defensive play matters. Every catch, throw, and out has to be completed perfectly. Rio’s back-to-back masterpieces showcased not only elite pitching performances from Tully and Dormann, but also the focus, chemistry, and confidence of the entire team.
In the pressure filled environment of playoff baseball, where seasons can end with a single bad inning, Rio Americano instead delivered perfection twice. On top of these 2 perfect games Rio Americano also continued all the way through playoffs to the Section Championship, where they beat El Capitan 3-0 at Sac City College to become the Division 3 champions.
For the players, the Rio community, and fans around Sacramento, this wasn’t just a winning streak — it was history.
