Poetry Out Loud champion to compete at county level

Junior Daphne Pannell won this year’s school Poetry Out Loud competition and will compete for the county title on Feb. 21. Pannell earned high marks for her recitation of Emily Dickinson’s “I Heard a Funeral in My Brain” and “The Tables Turned” by William Wordsworth. The runner-up is junior Olivia Huang.

“All the contestants performed beautifully and brought insight to the poems they performed,” said English teacher and contest organizer Michael Mahoney. “It was a razor-thin difference in the judging because they were so good, but Daphne brought a little extra and recited flawlessly.”

Valentine’s grams for children

Student government is running a community service project Feb. 5-9. On the stage or in C-10 during lunch, students are encouraged to write a heartfelt message that will be shared with the kids at Shriners Hospitals for Children.

“It’s important that everyone gets shown that they are loved on Valentine’s Day, especially these kids who are going through a hard time,” said Meredith Bluth, Community Service Commissioner.
